Mental Retardation means a condition arrested or incomplete development of mind of a person which is specially characterized by sub-normality of intelligence. It is not only the problem of the family to which the Mentally Retarded Child/Persons belongs, but of the Society and the State in general as a whole.
It is observed that if these Children/Persons are properly educated, trained and guided, they can suitably be engaged in any job as per their ability. The Rehabilitation of the Mentally Retarded, Autistic, CP, Multipple Handicapped Adults has assumed utmost importance. Almost all the parents of these Children/Persons are very much worried about their future. i . e. their maintenance after the death of the Parents.
Keeping the above problems in view, a group of parents of Bhubaneswar have decided to start a Mentally Retarded Centre named ‘Jagruti’ which is imparting general and vocational training to the Mentally Retarded Children/Adults irrespective of age, sex and religion. ‘Jagruti’ was being managed by a group of Parents through a registered Trust, named Dr.Braja Vihari Mohanty Memorial Mentally Retarded Benefit Trust initially at Plot No: 511, Nayapalli, Bhubaneswar-12, since 6th September, 1995. Now it is running at Plot No:-430(part), Shanti Nagar, Jharpara, Bhubaneswar – 6 .
